Distressed Scor-Pal marker Background Tutorial

This technique is a variation on Rita's brilliant Scoring with Markers Technique. I was paranoid about weakening the tips of my new marker, so I prescored the grid with the Scor-Pal tool. I also wanted to get a distressed (softened or watery) marker look on the grid, so it's just wetted (not a word but it should be, LOL.) Here's how to do the distressed version of a marker grid:

Supplies:
  • Scor-Pal
  • Cardstock
  • Markers (Stamp'n'Write markers (SU) bleed well)
  • Aqua Painter (or brush & water)
  • If embellishing: paper piercer & needle and thread

Distressed Scor-Pal Marker Grid:

Step 1.
Cut a piece of cardstock & score a grid on it
This is 4x4 inches (Kim's grid technique video tut here)

Step 2. Drag a marker along in the grid
(prescoring lets you use any markers & protects tips)

Step 3. You can use two/more colours of markers
[these are Old Olive (SU) and Breeze (CTMH)]

Step 4. If you're embellishing, pierce where the lines intersect
[a homemade fun foam piercing mat (4 pieces stuck together)
is 12" wide & fits in the Scor-Pal perfectly!]

Step 5. Go over the marker with a wet Aqua Painter

A wet paint brush will work too. This lets the marker bleed a little (slightly wet brush), or a lot (very wet brush.) Different cardstocks will react to the water differently. Watercolour paper will bleed beautifully and not warp, but this was Naturals White cs from Stampin' Up! and I liked the results with it.

If you want a more pronounced embossing on your grid
, just let it dry mostly & score over your lines again. The water lets you get really neat deep grooves

Step 6. Embellish as desired.
I used a Faux French Knot technique to embellish this grid:

More details on this thinger (& the finished project) to come in the next post.

  13. Great idea, Mel, and I like the suggestion of scoring before you use the pen - so you will stay inside the lines. You make everything look so easy!
