Embossed Silhouette Stamping on Vellum (a candle scene) :O)

I had such a blast with this vellum version of my embossed silhouette stamping technique. You can get a real glow and the outline still shows when it's back-lit, which struck me as kind of nifty! The look of this particular candle holder is rather dark, but it'd be cute with a pale sky, so it's not as spooky. ;o) Here's how to do it:

Step 1: emboss houses on vellum cardstock
(in black craft/pigment ink with clear embossing powder.
This is a current Stamin' Up! wheel.)




Step 2: colour base coat on houses in black marker (leaving windows white) I used a stampin' Up! Stampin' write marker. (I'm not sure how other ones will work.) You could just leave it at this & have your outline stamp turned into silhouettes or...

Step 3: ...This is optional: Emboss on top of the houses.

Good messy fun! A layer of clear embossing powder all over the houses lets the outlines of the houses show more when they're lit (and it has an added benefit of keeping the marker from smudging.)

There are two ways I use to get the embossing powder to stick:

• #1) Use a versamarker (but it gets very dirty with black marker. Blehck!) so me likey method number two....
  

• #2)...Just colour over with black Stampin' Write marker again. The wet marker will pick up clear embossing powder when you sprinkle it on. Working one house at a time seems to be the best way to keep the marker wet. If you use permanent marker it won't work as it dries too quickly. You can heat each house as you go to melt the powder and avoid messing it up.
  

If you miss any spots where the marker dried & didn't pick up embossing powder, you can go in with marker again after the embossing cools and add more powder. Of course, you just hafta be wary of overheatin' :O)




Step 4: Add base of Copic marker colouring to vellum cardstock for a sky
You can layer colours if you like. (Love how Copics work on vellum.) Marianne, goddess of markers is a vellum Copic pro!




Step 5: Add dark waterbased marker to vellum & blend the marker with a waterbrush (or damp paint brush.) Too much water may make the vellum cardstock bubble




Step 6: cut top of vellum in a cloud line shape




Step 7: pierce holes in vellum
(with a paper piercer to create stars the light shines through the holes)

This is a party light candle holder that a round of paper safely fits in, but you can make one by wrapping your vellum scene around any glass candle holder or any jar or glass container. Here's another shot of it lit ('cause glowy is kewl, heehee):
