Hi You fabulous people You,
Sorry I've been away so long. I've missed You! I'm okay, but I'm still feeling really run down. It'll be a while until I'm back in full swing. Here's a post though (and maybe a vellum technique that's new to you?) to hopefully inspire a little...
Adela, my talented fellow Caardvark made this stunning tree card that made me want to experiment with vellum & layers like crazy! On it, she's sandwiched leaves between the vellum & cardstock. Brilliant, hey? So this is the result of my playin' around: vellum collage...
1...how to create a vellum collage
2...make a stitched vellum sentiment
3...cheap tricks for snazzing up vellum
Step 1) Cut a mat for your image & adhere collage elements to it (stamped or other nifty items)--this is gaffer tape from 7Gyspies.
Step 2) Stamp your image on Vellum Cardstock & colour it (I've embossed the birdcage "Sweet Z's" stamp from Unity Stamp Co. and coloured and shaded with Copics, silver Zig Painty pen & a white CTMH marker.)
Step 3) Stamp more images & adhere them face up to the back of the vellum (i like to use a thin coat of Tombow monomulti)
Step 4) Add adhesive on the back of the paper elements (they'll hide the adhesive)
Step 5) Pierce vellum edges (if stitching it on)
Step 6) Adhere vellum to your collaged mat
Step 7) Stitch vellum on & add beads, if you like.
If you want to try this out, but don't want to fuss with glue, just sketch out your sentiment on regular cardstock instead of vellum & sew it (using double-sided tape on the back to hold the thread ends)
Stitched Sentiment:
Step 1) Write out your sentiment on a piece of scrap paper (or type & print it out)
Step 2) Lay Vellum Cardstock over your sentiment
Step 3) Pierce vellum to create holes for sewn sentiment
Step 4) Thread needle & thread through & use adhesive to affix the end of the thread (I used Crystal laquer & the end of a big safety pin to glue the ends down & keep them behind the letters so they would show less)
Step 5) Stitch letters & glue ends down between each letter

...create a vellum collage
It felt SO artsy to play with these layers...the possibilities are endless and it seems like a funky way to use up your treasured scraps. I even started a box to save all my really extra nifty scraps in. The basic process is so simple: just glue bits to your mat & the back of your vellum to make layers.
- Vellum Cardstock
- Stamp, ink, embossing powder & colouring medium
- Cardstock for mat (Black used here)
- Collage elements (gaffer tape used here)
- Contrasting paper for collage images under vellum
- Adhesive: Tombow Monomulti & doublesided tape (or your fave)
- Paper piercer, thread & needle, seed beads
- Zig Painty pen (metallic silver)

- Scrap of vintage dictionary paper "dream" (available HERE)
- Crystal lacquer
- thread & needle

I always seem to go at things backwards, so here are some ways to alter vellum edges as an afterthought...
I always seem to go at things backwards, so here are some ways to alter vellum edges as an afterthought...
A) Add a silver edge with a zig painty pen (or other metallic pen edging)
B) Add a coloured edge with markers (water based markers may curl the vellum a bit, but the sewing here prevented that. Copic markers are great for not curling vellum cardstock.)
Hope your craftin' mojo is in full gear
(and i can't wait until mine is back) ;O)

Mel you just can't believe how thrilled I am that you did this tutorial. I had seen a collage done like that but it was done with glass in a wood box and at that time I gave some thought to doing the same thing but with cardstock but never got around to playing with it. This is fabulous and I am sure it looks great! And I might add that PaperTemptress carries the largest selection of vellum weight and colors that can be found anywhere (just had to throw that in there LOL) Again thank you for providing us with inspiration with great detail and thought! I hope this comment finds you doing better, you know I am ALWAYS sending good karma your way!!
