Card for Marissa (aka Rissa-Bean)

This is a card I made for Rissa. She's havin' a baby soon!(She conceived on vacation at our house, heehee). Seems like yesterday I was living with her when she was a little one. We had SO much fun. She's going to make THE best Mommy, ever; Chris's strong family roots make him the perfect Daddy, too. I'm so lucky to have such great family (and I expect regular baby pics in the mail!) ;-)

Whale watching

It's out of season (I think) but you never know, we may see a whale in Uclulet. One visiting for Christmas vacation, maybe? If not, we're sure to see some stormy weather--From INSIDE :-)This card was done with the shaving cream technique which is SO easy: you just put shaving cream on a plate, put drops of re-inker on it and swirl it around; then, you put your paper on top. All that's left to do is wipe it off and let dry (Though, if you use super moisturizing stuff like I did, you'll wait a lifetime for it to dry and adhesives will shun it forever. I used crystal effects, 'cause glue dots wouldn't stick--and they stick to ANYthing)

Wish us luck with the Whales,
Mel

Esther & Jay's Christmas Card

Esther & Jay don't have my blog yet either ;0)
This is their Christmas card using the same stamp as Denise's. Just goes to show you how different techniques can create completely antithetical looks.
Charles picked the colours. The Scan is an odd one; the ribbon is actually a light Burgundy (as are the eyelets and the thin mat). You can't see it in the scan, but the white area is textured and has dazzling diamonds sparkling all over it (adhered with heat'n'stick powder). Feels Christmas-y.

We're looking forward to visiting with Charles's family after our romantic birthday get-away in Ucluelet visit this link to see our cabin 3:
http://www.thecabins.ca/
Wish we were loaded, so we could fly all my family from Ontario and have a BIG party there! (after our three days alone, of course) ;-)

Denise's Christmas Card

This is Denise's Christmas card. (She doesn't have my blog yet so it's safe to post it. ;-)
The snowmen are done in faux metal. The button is special:
She introduced me to Alert Bay (an amazing place with amazing people about which Denise knows an amazing amount.) We had a fabulous trip there in the summer with Esther.
I thought the button would go perfectly on here. It reflects the same purples as the card-stock colours and sparkles like a gem--it's Abalone (handmade). Too bad scanners don't work like TV!

I went a little wild with this one. The coffee cup has crystal effects on top (heated it looks like bubbles). The foam has real cinnamon sprinkled on heat n stick powder. The foam is put on with dimensionals, so I could add a piece of a cinnamon stick (smells SO good).
The background is painted with vanilla and I've hand drawn some steam in with the signo gel pen.The little coffee beans look so real embossed (though I see a spot I missed up in the right hand corner, oooops!I used the rectangle hand-held punch to add details in the corners cuz it needed something (Also, it's too late at night to add noisy eyelets, and I don't have brown ones--TRAVESTY!!! where is the 24 hour craft store when you need it??? ;-)
Mmmmmmmmmmm... me want something hot n cinnamony

Matt's "congratulations on your awesome graduate school thesis defense" card

Another black n white card. The title of this post says it all, hehehe. This card includes ephemera (from Chapter's library card kit) and an emboss resist bookmark. Charles (brilliant as ever) had the perfect lit. quote. How appropriate considering Matt is one essay away from having his Masters in English--and shares Charles's love of Rimbaud! You ROCK Matt! We give you an A-plusplusplusplusplusplusplusplusplus (without revisions)!!!

Kim's Christmas Card (THIS is a Christmas card?)

This isn't very Christmas-y but I thought I'd be non-traditional this year--just for Kim. She's always inspiring me with her card creations. (Tho' she's unnaturally modest).
--You can see her gallery on spitcoast under twingirls; my splitcoast name is stampztoomuch.

I created a new custom spectrum pad for this card (out of an older one that had colours I didn't love). The sets are new sellabration sets called "Delight in Life" (flowers) and "So Very." Demonstrators got to purchase them early. Woo hoooo, (This year's sets are way funkier than last year's, so I couldn't resist) :-) All of the details on here are embossed and the flowers have beads in the centers. The flowers are on pop-up glue dots. (My love for glue dots could be considered an addiction, but who's telling?).

Kim seemed to like her card, but in my pre-girl-party rush I forgot to sign the inside (Had a whole cheesey speech planned, cause Kim is one of those amazing friends). She looked inside the card and we had a huge laugh: "outside: "so loved;" inside: "NOT!" She let me have it back to write in it, lol. Me S.m.r.t.

Happy Birthday Phil!

This is a birthday card I made for Phil (Charles's sister Denise's boyfriend; he's a sweety). It combines four sets: down to business, alphabits, happy everything, and be happy. I love how some of the sets seem girly (like 'be happy') but have elements that work with anything.
My favourite new thing tho' has to be embossing with versamarker; you can draw anything and emboss it (that's how I did the circle around 23 (his age) [in the top photo] and Phil's name on the envelope). Too easy to imagine.

Fun with the Scanner

This week I discovered the joy of scanning! Who'da'- thunk'it? (Everyone else, I imagine) ;-)

This card is made from a magazine clipping I saved from some (long unremembered) magazine years ago. Unfortunately, I can't credit the sculpter (sorry mystery artist, you are long unremembered too, though worthy of remembering)...
I scanned and softened the image, printed on cardstock, aged with a used teabag, and then assembled the rest of the card. (The twill tape ribbon came with the phase and is hand-dyed.)

My favourite thing about scanning images is that you can play with the colour. Notice the original image above altered to be turquoise (love that colour; can you tell?) and burgandy pink. Couldn't be easier.
Thanks for looking, Mel

Body Landscape Cards (caution: contains nudity)

An example of a "one of" art card with a water colour nude (scanned and resized version of my original sketch) and stamped background (Paisley by Stampin' Up).

The figure study is one of my favourite art genres. Watercolour pencil crayons are perhaps my favourite medium; they offer control, a sketch-like texture, and yet let you add the fluidity of water after you are satisfied with a sketch, love the medium sighhhhhhh...

Happy Trees--Pass it On

This is my latest thing: I like trees; I like making cards outta paper made from trees; I like the idea of reusing cards that are made outta paper made from trees. :-) SOOOOO, I put sticky notes in my cards. That way they can be reused. It ends up being a card with a message (or alternatively, a letter) inside it and a gift. It may seem a little hokey, but not if you ask a tree.

There's one example in these photos. I made the envelope reusable by not putting a name on the front. (You could put a sticky note on it too.) You can also include a few of the same sticky notes under the one with your message--in case the person receiving it wants to follow suit.

It makes it easier for those who love to make cards, but don't love their hand-writing--or only have a ballpoint pen on hand and don't want to mess up a card that took time and love to make fancy-smancy. ;-) Stamping a coordinating image on the note and using a matching colour makes it a little nicer (I've used chocolate chip to match the ink on the card).

I've made a promise to myself to try this idea in all of my cards; maybe it'll catch on.
:-)

My First Swap

Tomorrow is my first Demonstrator's meeting. I'm going to meet Sheila in Surrey. (She's my awesome Stampin Up! Upline).
We make eleven cards (10 for trade with other demos and one to enter a card contest).
The suggested theme for this swap was Valentine's Day, but I'm not a big fan of pink, so I used cameo coral and tempting turquoise (I use the latter colour in every card I can).
The colours are pulled from the winter mini (to peek at the mini visit:
It's hard to see in the scan, but the heart is embossed and has hologram highlights mixed into the embossing powder.
Well, off to make Christmas cards,
Mel :-)

Stampaholics Anonymous

My name is Mel I am fully hooked on stamping; I have gone one full day without embossing. I can't stop (even when I should be doing something else, lol). So our place is a mess, but Charles is ever-patient (even though I move all of his stuff offa the table, so I have more room to make messes) ;-).

I am gifting quite a few of my projects this year, so I have to be wary of what I'm posting. :-)
The cards pictured here are a selection of the 5 I designed for the stamp-a-stack I hosted just outside of Nanaimo (Lantzville) at The Black Dog Cafe
with the amazing help of Charles's sister the ever-sweet Denise (who lugged GIANT amounts of stuff on the ferry to the Island, even a big ol' rolly toolbox that kept coming open and helped with the insanity of the workshop (even though she never got to finish her own cards). She's THE BEST!

and Esther (my m.i.l: mother in love) She is GLORIOUS too. She helped organize the whole thing, carted lamps (and Denise and I from the ferry), and she was even my M.C.

Chris who runs the Black Dog was great, and her cooking is beyond description, YUmmmmmm.

I hope to get pics of the event, as it was my first one. (Chris took a few). The crafters were an awesome bunch---it was a LOT to take in and we never finished... ;0( --- But they were still fun and patient. I learned a great deal for the next one. and I won't drag the stuff so far this time. ;-)

If you'd like directions and/or a supply list for the cards please email mmmccart@sfu.ca

A Little INTRO

Hi Gals & Guys!

Welcome! I'm Mel (or Melissa) and I'm so happy that you've found my blog!
I live in Canada in Port Moody, BC (near Vancouver). Such a beautiful place to live.

The crafting world & all the fabulous people in it always make me feel so grateful and just plain glad. I'm excited to be able to share with all of You.

Set the craftiness free! (my crafty story)

The greatest passion of the blog-side of my life, is to share things for free. Commercially made supplies are lovely & I'm glad there are such beautiful things on offer. I covet my fair share, but I like to think that you can make projects for next to nothing. (Though I do try to support crafting companies, especially small companies and artists, as well.)

FTC Declaration:

I'm not currently working with any design teams or blogs. Usually, just free-wheeling it! Though I do participate as a design team guest from time to time.

I sometimes receive product as part of being on design teams, but you can be assured that I will never promote a product that I do not use and truly enjoy.

These are some Companies/Blogs that have gifted me
product for promotional purposes (directly/indirectly):

Angel's Landing; Caardvarks; Clear & Simple Stamps; Core'dinations; Cuttlebug Challenge Blog; Creative Cuts & More; EK success; Fred She Said; Hero Arts; Inkadinkado; Innovative Stamp Creations; Just Rite Stampers; May Arts Ribbon; Mo's Digital Pencil; My Favorite Things; Little Paper Shop; Paper Temptress; ProvoCraft; Paper Garden Projects; Purple Onion Designs; Sakura; Skipping Stones Designs; Squigglefly; Unity Stamp Co.

I also shop from many of these companies out of my shallow pocket... ;o) I hope I haven't missed any, but if you are wondering if a post is "sponsored" or not, basically the give-away is if I am on the design team (or have been) full-time or blogging as a guest, or if I say that someone has sent me something to use.

I will make every effort to disclose when I'm helping to promote something, just so's ya know.

Thanks for stopping in!
