(13) BeWitchin' Luminary (Silhouette & Sparkling Stars)

You'd be surprised at how easy this project is. What really shocked me is how little supplies it required. It's made with only one piece of 8.5 x 11 cardstock & one 3 inch strip of patterned paper! (and a little piece of vellum...) It looks much better in person. The lights really twinkle through the little holes! :O)

The
Eat Drink & be Scary Patterned paper does all the fancy work for you since it has embossing on the spiders the witch's hats and the candy! And stripes too. (I freaked when I saw that detail.) :o) It glitters even in the dark. So pretty it's spoooooky! ;o)

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the element that makes the project for me is the Witch (Hazel.) She couldn't cast a more perfect silhouette!

Piercing the stars is so quick (like the speed of light, LOL) and it lets light twinkle through like magic. :o) All the steps are photographed & outlined here, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask...

Supplies:

These all come in the Paper Garden Projects "Happy Halloweenie!" kit:

  • The adorable Witch Stamp (‘Witch Hazel & Blackie Fly’)
  • White paper to stamp the witch on (great quality)
  • 1 sheet of black of textured cardstock
  • 1 three inch section of the Eat Drink & be Scary patterned paper
Things from your stash/Paper Garden Projects:
Tools: Paper piercer, paper trimmer, scissors, Oh So Sticky Tape. Foam mounting tape

Download the cloud topper template here.

To make the stars twinkle: A candle (tea-light in a canning jar)/ a battery-powered light.

Instructions:

Step 1. Stamp, colour, & cut the witch & kitty

Stamp in Onyx Black Versafine Ink Pad and colour or paint (I used watercolour pencils & Niji watercolour brush.) No need to cut too closely because they look awesome with a glow around them. You can doodle over it with a Sakura Star dust Gelly Roll Pen to make it glimmer in a snap.

Step 2. Rub ink on the vellum to make a sky. I just used my hand and rubbed ink on in layers (working in circles) but you can use a sponge. [I used Turquoise, Navy Blue, & Black ink]

Step 3. Trim the inked vellum to 5 by 5 1/2 inches & pierce stars into it. This is SO fun--random star making

Step 4. Add glitz to the stars with a Sakura Star dust Gelly Roll Pen. Even the name is perfect LOL (Just trace the holes in a circle & it'll shine)

Step 5. To make the moon: cut a circle (I used Nestabilities) & ink it a little White ink on a Niji watercolour brush. You can add glitter with the Star dust pen too. :o)

Step 6. Cut the side pieces: cut one 3 3/8 inch by 11 inch piece off and split it into two halves (two pieces measuring 3 3/8 inches by 5 1/2 inches)

Step 7. Add adhesive to the inside (non-textured side)

Step 8. Attach the black side pieces to the vellum
(Attach at the 5 inch long side. The thin black pieces will show at the front of the vellum.)

Step 9. Cut into that gorgeous Eat Drink & be Scary paper! (I love the embossing!) & the black textured cardstock:

Patterned paper cuts:
  • Piece 1: Cut bellow the spiders & the coloured stripes (I left a wee bit of stripe on top of the next strip: the witch hats) Trim 1/2 an inch off of each end
  • Piece 2: Cut bellow the trick or treat strip. Trim 1/2 an inch off of each end
    (makes it perfectly even!)
Black textured paper cuts:
  • Piece 3: Cut one black strip 2 inches wide (11 inches long)
  • Piece 4: Cut one black strip 1 1/8 inch wide (11 inches long)

Step 10. Score each strip at 3 and 8 inches
(this will create your shape)

Step 11. Add adhesive tape onto the back of the patterned paper & adhere to the black strips (it was scary sad to hide those cobwebs!) ;o)

Step 12. Placement of the strips is easy because of the stripes in the patterned paper: Just line them up with the edges of the black cardstock (they are the same width.) The picture above has the strips moved over to the left an inch so you can see where the stripes of the patterned paper sit when you stick it on.

Step 13. Just add adhesive (behind the stripes that have the witch hats and the colourful little stripes.)

Step 14. Here's what it looks with the strips stuck on.

Step 15. Adhere the moon (I used Crystal Lacquer) but any strong adhesive will do. Adhere the witch (Sshe's stuck on here with Foam mounting tape.) You can glitter pen & smudge it with your finger if you'd like a trail of sparkles behind her.

Step 16. Pierce stars in the side pieces

Step 17. The clouds use the last section of that lovely textured black cardstock. You can cut them freehand or use this template & make it this way:
  1. Print the template & cut it out
  2. Trace the bumpy cloud shapes onto the black cardstock with a white pencil crayon
  3. Cut it out, glitter it ( star dust pen) & stick it onto the luminary!

Step 18. Now you can light up the sky & make those stars twinkle! Add a candle in behind the luminary (a tea-light in a canning jar is a safe option, if attended & It's bewitching to watch it sparkle.) For super safe use, you could use a battery-powered light or set it in a window. Daylight makes it glow too!

Thanks for checkin' out all of the Halloweenie-ness. Hope your Halloween is scarily fun!

That's IT! I quit!! I'm hangin' up my paper cutter and callin' it. How the heck can us mere mortals compete with this brand of brilliance. How, I axe you, Ms. A-Licious!?!?!

Even Card of the Week adores you!!!

Frankly, I don't know how you can sit there torturing me with all this flippin' wonderfulness!?! Arrgh!!

I swear Mel-a-Licious, stop with all these tutorials and just sit down and write the book. A "how-to" book. A "how-to" book for paper-crafting idiots such as myself. Be sure to use the bathtub pix, too .. right there on the cover!

Awed hugs!

Wow, Mel. . .this is the prettiest Halloween centerpiece I've seen. So pretty how it glows so nicely. I absolutely love it!! I would love to make something like this but I've decided to skip the Halloween decorations this year and just focus on Christmas. My kids are too old to appreciate Halloween any more. . .makes me a bit sad. I used to have fun decorating all the different holidays but the only person who seem to care about it is me.

Wish I could pop a few more babies so I can have fun decorating during the holidays and make fun goody bags and stuff. But that's no reason to have a baby! LOL!!

Your house must be fun and festive with all your beautiful projects during the holidays!! Awesome job!!
